The Institute of Avian Research "Vogelwarte Helgoland" in Wilhelmshaven in collaboration with the Institute for Waterbird and Wetlands Research (IWWR), Verden, is looking for a PhD student to study the effects of hunting on the spatial and temporal movement patterns of resting and wintering Arctic geese

(Greater White-fronted Goose, Barnacle Goose) as well as breeding Greyleg Goose by the use of most recent GPS-tracking technology.The project relates to a mandate of the Lower Saxony State Parliament to evaluate the current temporal and spatial distribution of resting and breeding geese in Lower Saxony as one of the key areas for migrating arctic and breeding local geese, respectively, their impact on agricultural crops and the role of hunting on their movement patterns. The study is part of a joint project of the Institute for Waterbird and Wetlands Research (IWWR), Verden, the Institute of Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research (ITAW), University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, and the Institute of Avian Research. The project is funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.The Institute of Avian Research is a non-university research center in the portfolio of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Cultural Affairs. The institute’s major research focus is bird migration and population biology.The position is available from October 2015 for 3 years and paid according to TVL E13 (http://oeffentlicher-dienst.info/tv-l/west/) with 50% of the regular work hours. The place of work will be at the institute’s headquarters in Wilhelmshaven.The position requires solid background in biology or a related discipline (Master or Diploma), good knowledge about geese biology, excellent statistical skills ( “R”; GIS), competences in data mining and remote sensing as well as motivation and skills to work in the field.
