Junior Group Leader (W1) in Evolutionary Functional Genomics

The Faculty of Biology at the University of Muenster (Germany) invites applications for a Junior Professorship (W1 salary scale; equivalent to a non-tenure track assistant professorship or lecturer) in Evolutionary Functional Genomics. The position will start 1st January 2010 or later. Appropriate laboratory space and access to a technology platform for state-of-the-art genomics techniques (Integrated Functional Genomics (IFG)) is provided.
The successful candidate will lead an independent junior group with a strong research program in a cross-disciplinary field combining evolution and physiology. He/she will study adaptations to biotic and/or abiotic stressors on micro- or macro-evolutionary scales, making use of modern functional genomics techniques. Molecular techniques may include large-scale study of natural genetic variation (such as re-sequencing, SNP analysis etc.) and dynamic aspects of gene activity (transcriptomics, DNA methylation profiling etc.) to address the genetic basis and physiological consequences of evolutionary change. The position includes teaching (in English or German) at the undergraduate (Bachelor) and graduate (Master) level in the candidate's field of expertise.
The position is initially for three years with a possible renewal for another three years. The position comes with substantial funding (positions for a postdoc and a technician, start-up and base funding). The successful candidate is expected to participate in ongoing collaborative research efforts of the Faculty of Biology and encouraged to acquire additional extramural funding. Applicants must have a PhD or doctorate in a biological or related discipline. Postdoctoral experience and a strong publication record are expected.

Postdoctoral position on the evolutionary genetics of butterfly wing patterns.

A postdoctoral position is available to work on the evolutionary genetics of a balanced polymorphism for wing-pattern mimicry in the Amazonian butterfly Heliconius numata. The project is devoted to characterise the genomic organisation and annotation of a wing pattern-determining âsupergeneâ locus, and to nd to understand the evolutionary history of chromosomal rearrangements associated with mimicry polymorphism and balancing selection. The research will involve various approaches ranging from linkage mapping to molecular evolution, genomics/bioinformatics and evo-devo, and will take advantage of a rich comparative framework with closely related species. A rich and rapidly increasing amount of genomic resources is now available for this and other Heliconius species. The full genome sequencing of a closely related species is underway. The successful candidate will join a new team lead by Mathieu Joron and funded by the ERC and the CNRS at the Natural History Museum in Paris. A PhD and a strong background in genetics or evolutionary biology are required. Good skills in molecular genetics are essential. Fluency in French is not required. The postdoc will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with local evolutionary biologists, postgraduate students, as well as with international collaborators from the Heliconius Genome Consortium.
The Natural History Museum (www.mnhn.fr) is situated right in the centre of Paris, next to UniversitĂŠ Pierre & Marie Curie (Paris 6 Jussieu), Ecole Normale SupĂŠrieure, and Institut Jacques Monod. The Natural History Museum has recently enjoyed an intensive campaign of recruitment of young researchers in all aspects of biodiversity and evolutionary research, and Paris as a whole has a vibrant research community in the life sciences.

Impacts of climate change on bird species across networks of protected areas
We are seeking a research scientist to investigate the impacts of climate change on bird species across networks of protected areas, with a particular focus on the region of the Himalayas and Lower Mekong in South-east Asia, and the Albertine Rift Region of East Africa. The post is fixed-term for 24 months, ideally commencing in January 2010.
You will work as part of a larger group investigating climate change impacts on species and, more generally, conservation strategies under climate change. The research will be undertaken in collaboration with BirdLife International and is funded by the MacArthur Foundation.
Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant biological or mathematical science discipline. Key skills that are desirable for the position include: experience of analyzing and modelling data and, ideally, expertise in using GIS software; scientific computing skills that facilitate manipulating of large datasets; an ability and willingness to work as part of a team and to collaborate with other scientists; an ability to write scientific reports and papers and to communicate results in oral presentations at meetings and conferences.

Position As a post doc you are responsible for carrying forward our research activities on the regulation of human life histories under adverse conditions. To this end we have initiated a cohort study in the North-East of Ghana. This study is part of a greater endeavor identifying cues that are relevant for early survival and determine the rate of ageing. Genetics play a key role but only within the peculiar environmental conditions to which the participants are exposed. It is a team effort in which several junior and senior researchers from (inter)national laboratories are involved. You will be positioned within the 'LifeSpan' project, a EU-funded Network of Excellence that is coordinated in Leiden. As a member of the management team, you will spend part of your time on coordinating and running the Network.
The department
You will be positioned within the Department of Gerontology and Geriatrics. The focus of this department is on scientific research on ageing and longevity, elderly people in means of patient care for elderly as well as participation in the medical and biomedical curriculum of Leiden University and hosting the training for geriatricians.
Your profile You have a background and PhD that enables you to study the genetic regulation of human life histories. You are able to work independently and in a team, and possess excellent communication skills, including fluent written and spoken English. You like to take initiatives and are driven by scientific interests. You are enthusiastic and inquisitive and possess the creative skills to find solutions though with a critical eye for your work. A flexible work approach and ability to cope with stress is essential and you will be expected to present and publish your findings. Experience in and affinity with scientific programming is an advantage.
