Research fellow (PhD candidate) in population biology of herring

The Department of Biology (BIO) (http://www.uib.no/en/bio has a vacancy for a research fellow in population biology of herring. The position will be associated with the research group Fisheries Ecology and Aquaculture (http://www.uib.no/en/rg/fea) at BIO and the research group Pelagic Fish at the Institute of Marine Research (http://www.imr.no/forskning/faggrupper/pelagisk_fisk/en). The position will also be affiliated with the Hjort Centre for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics. The daily workplace will be divided between Department of Biology at Marineholmen and Institute of Marine Research (Nordnes and [UTF-8?]Flødevigen) upon further agreement.

The fellowship position is for a fixed term of 4 years, of which 25 % will comprise mandatory work, such as teaching and/or administrative tasks.

The fellowship period may be reduced if you have been previously employed as a research fellow/research assistant or the like.

Project/work tasks

The aim for the position is studies of herring population biology, focusing on population structure, migration dynamics and the connectivity between oceanic and coastal populations.

• The candidate will work in the field (including research vessel) and in the lab including analysis of population identity of herring.

 
Qualifications and personal qualities

• You must have completed a master's degree or equivalent in biology within the field of fisheries or marine biology, or have submitted your master's thesis for evaluation before expiry of the application deadline.
• Documented experience from field work (fish in nature), sampling data on fish population structure and fish behaviour is an advantage.
• Experience with analyses of large biological and environmental data sets using common statistical tools (preferably R-Statistics), is an advantage as well.
• Authorization to work with animal research is also an advantage.
• You must be proficient in both written and oral English
• You must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and you should demonstrate the ability to cooperate.
• Publications and other relevant scientific activity will also be evaluated, but here the time the candidate has had available after the [UTF-8?]master’s exam will be taken into consideration.
• Applicants having allergies incompatible with working at sea or in the lab will not be evaluated.

The research training programme
As a research fellow you must take part in an approved study programme leading to a PhD degree to be completed within a time period of 3 years. It is therefore a requirement that you meet the criteria for admission to the PhD study programme at the University of Bergen.

A final plan for completion of the research programme must be approved by the faculty within three months after you have begun working in the position.
