Postdoctoral Researcher in Evolutionary Biology: Sexual conflict and male-female coevolution

I invite applications for a Postdoctoral researcher position in the Junior research group of Dr. Claudia Fricke (http://ieb.uni-muenster.de/evolseco) at the Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity at the University of Muenster (WWU) in Germany. WWU is a large vibrant university hosting a number of excellent scientific institutions (http://www.uni-muenster.de/en/). The Institute for Evolution and Biology provides a stimulating research environment with a number of scientific groups researching on diverse topics centred on different aspects of the study of Evolution. The town of Muenster itself is characterised by its many students and presents a dynamic environment with many cultural and social events throughout the year (http://www.muenster.de/en/).

Brief research outline:
I am interested in the study of traits shaped by sexual antagonistic coevolution driven by sexual conflict between the sexes. Sexual conflict is prevalent between the sexes and has been shown to occur in a broad range of taxa. In my research I work with the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, which is a widely used model organism and also sexual conflict has been widely studied in this species. Within the project the successful candidate will study divergence in sexual traits with a special focus on male accessory gland proteins (Acps). Acps are known to evolve rapidly and are hypothesised to be shaped by sexual antagonistic coevolution thus should according to theory diverge rapidly and potentially be important for speciation. We will combine molecular work with behavioural experimental work to measure trait expression at the molecular level combined with phenotypic tests and fitness estimates to test predictions from sexual conflict theory.

Salary and appointment:
The salary will be for 12 months (TV-L E13/100%) with regular weekly working hours of 39 hours and 50 minutes. The start date will be May 2015 (or as soon as possible thereafter) until April 2016 with the possibility to extend the contract for one additional year.

Qualifications and merits:
I seek a highly motivated candidate of any nationality and those with PhD degree in evolutionary biology are invited to apply. A documented expertise in any of the following subjects will be useful: bioinformatics skills, a good understanding of statistics and preferably previous experience with Drosophila work or another insect model and good molecular skills. Applicants should be highly motivated and have excellent communication skills. The working language of the institute and the lab is English. The University of Muenster is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the proportion of women academics. Consequently, we actively encourage applications by women. Female candidates with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered within the framework of the legal possibilities. Preference will be given to disabled applicants in case of equivalent qualification.

Please send your application in one single PDF file to Dr. Claudia Fricke ( Tato emailová adresa je chráněna před spamboty, abyste ji viděli, povolte JavaScript ). Included should be 1) a cover letter with a statement of your research interests and motivation (max. 1 page) including when you will be available to start the position, 2) your CV including details of your research experience including a list of publications 3) max three pdf of your published papers and 4) contact details of at least two referees.

Applications should be written in English and the deadline is the 15th of February 2015.
