We are pleased to announce one PhD position targeting an exciting project in Diptera systematics. The project is available at Ximo Mengual’s research group and the student will be based at the the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) and enrolled at the University of Bonn, Bonn (Germany).

Description

The project is entitled “Origin and diversification of hoverflies: a revision of the genera Asarkina and Allobaccha”. The objective is to perform a taxonomic revision of the genera Asarkina and Allobaccha (Diptera: Syrphidae), both occurring in the Afrotropical, Oriental and Australasian Regions. The project also aims to resolve phylogenetic placement of these taxa with the development of a workflow for Ultra-Conserved Elements or Anchored Hybrid Enrichment technique. The project combines classical methods of systematics with innovative techniques and approaches and it involves travels and field work. Your key tasks as a PhD student are: - manage and carry out your research project including field work - pass PhD courses - write scientific articles and your PhD thesis - participate in BIG4 ITN training events and international congresses - stay at a research institution(s) abroad for a few months - participate in the diptera collection management and other research, curation or teaching related work conducted by the Diptera Section, ZFMK. Application should include: 1) your letter of motivation, 2) CV including your e-mail address and other contact data as well as contact details of 1-3 referees who already know you as a student or employee, 3) list of publications including submitted or in press papers, if any, 4) transcript of BSc or MSc diploma or equivalent. It is desirable that in your letter of motivation you mention your experience with Diptera.

English is commonly spoken language at the ZFMK and the working language at Mengual lab however, German skills will be helpful for everyday life in Bonn.
