South Africa: Field assistant, Vervet Monkey project PDF Tisk Email

University of Lethbridge, Canada

Position Description:
We have a vacancy for a field assistant at our vervet monkey field site in South Africa and are now looking for someone who can begin in October or November 2015.

This volunteer position is likely to suit someone who is interested in acquiring data collection skills prior to undertaking his/her own graduate research. Field assistants collect a range of behavioural, ecological and physiological data under the supervision of graduate and postdoctoral researchers. These data contribute to the long-term database as well as to specific research projects and come from four large, habituated groups. Please note that there is no opportunity for successful applicants to conduct independent research.

Some sense of the study population and site can be obtained from the following publication:

A relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent training. Applicants must be able to stay for a minimum of six months and hold a current driver's license. Proven ability to work and live amicably alongside others under field conditions will obviously be advantageous.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
The project provides free lodging and a stipend sufficient to cover food and basic requirements. We contribute to the travel expenses of all assistants who stay for longer than six months.

Term of Appointment:
We expect applicants to be able to spend a minimum of six months (maximum: 12 months) in the field. Successful applicants must demonstrate that they have medical cover for the duration of their stay in the field.

Application Deadline:
October 31st 2015

Comments:
Applicants should be aware that the study site is home to dangerous animals, such as rhinoceros, buffalo and elephant, and that field work is conducted on foot.
