The Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) based in Dummerstorf near Rostock, Germany is a foundation under public law and member of the scientific community Gottfried-Wilhelm Leibniz. The scope of the institute with about 300 employees is basic and practical research in the area of biology for farm animals.

The salary is according to Tarifvertrag der Länder (TV-L) up to pay grade 13 (50 %).

The applicant should contribute to the junior research group [UTF-8?]‘Phenotyping of animal [UTF-8?]welfare’ while pursuing his/her own qualification (PhD degree). The aim of the junior research group is the compilation of a list of animal-based, practically applicable markers for the assessment of animal welfare. Mathematical models for the interplay of genetics and behavior have been developed within the [UTF-8?]‘PHANOMICS’ project. The prospective PhD student should incorporate knowledge, which is available in literature sources around the world, into these models to extend and refine them. The goal is to verify existing or to identify new marker candidates (from molecular biology or behavior physiology).Requirements:

  • University degree (MSc-level) in bioinformatics, biomathematics, agricultural sciences, or any related discipline
  • Programming skills (e. g., Java, R, MATLAB)
  • Familiarity with text mining and/or modeling of complex biological data is a plus
  • Proficiency in English, spoken as well as written
  • Personal initiative, capability for teamwork, and independent working style within this highly interdisciplinary junior research group
