Research Training Group: Interdisciplinary approach to functional biodiversity
research (IBR) Excellent qualification in the framework of biodiversity research at the
University of Oldenburg The Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK) of Lower Saxony
supports the Research Training Group [UTF-8?]âIBRâ with
15 PhD scholarships
Start: 01.11.2014 (scholarships will be given for 3 years each)
The Carl von Ossietzky University is a dynamic, continuously growing university with
biodiversity research as one of its priority programs.
Understanding the response of biodiversity to the pressures of global change and its role for
ecosystem functions requires integrative research across basic ecology, evolutionary biology
and theory as well as interdisciplinary approaches to biodiversity conservation and
management. The Research Training Group (RTG) [UTF-8?]âIBR: Interdisciplinary approach to
functional biodiversity [UTF-8?]researchâ is aiming to investigate biodiversity in overarching
approaches across terrestrial and marine habitats studying microbes, primary producers and
higher evel consumers, focusing on the link between biodiversity and ecosystem processes.
Projects are organized in clusters:
A) Spatial Dynamics: to study the potential for rapid evolution under changing conditions as
well as phylogenetic constraints on the emergent properties of communities and ecosystems
B) Eco-evolutionary Dynamics: to understand how the ability of a species to adapt to unstable
conditions contributes to [UTF-8?]âecosystem [UTF-8?]functioningâ
C) Resilience and Biodiversity: in coupled human - environment systems in light of
biodiversity loss in anthropogenically dominated ecosystems
The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of women in science.
Therefore, equally qualified female candidates shall be given preference. Applicants with
disabilities will be preferentially considered in case of equal qualification.
The program is addressed to candidates having a master's or diploma degree in biology or
related subjects with excellent study achievements. The willingness to work on an
interdisciplinary PhD project and good English language skills are expected.
Topics, single projects and details of the application requirements can be viewed on the
website of the RTG (www.icbm.de/ibr).
Please indicate up to three projects in your application and rank them according to your
personal preference.
Please send your application preferentially as a single PDF file including the usual documents
