Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist in Shellfish Ecology and Production: Nykabing Mors, Denmark

Applications are invited for a position as Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist targeting research, public sector consultancy and innovation in shellfish production and fisheries. The position is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with work location at the Danish Shellfish Centre (DSC, Nykabing Mors, Denmark).

Responsibilities and tasks 
The work area of the position is to advance our understanding of shellfish ecology and biology in relation to production and utilisation including environmental interactions with focus on bivalves. This includes i) enhancing our understanding of the ecological impact of shellfish fisheries with the aim of developing a sustainable fishery; ii) developing economically viable shellfish cultures including mitigation cultures with positive impact on environmental quality ii) improving our understanding of ecological impact of shellfish culture; iii) developing economical and ecological sustainable methods for new species in shellfish aquaculture; iv) evaluation of management plans and technical measures allowing a sustainable shellfish production/harvesting. The research is done in a combination of analysing data acquired from field and laboratory experiments, data from public and fisheries monitoring as well as data from commercial productions utilising modelling techniques in an interlinked approach. Innovative skills are important, as the area requires new solutions.

The applicant is expected to improve the capacity of the institute for conducting relevant research within the field, giving advice to managers of fisheries, policy makers and other relevant authorities as well as foster innovation in cooperation with the industry. The Researcher/Senior Researcher is furthermore expected to be actively engaged in writing applications for both national Danish and international funding as well as being in charge of projects. The Researcher/Senior Researcher will contribute to teaching in the master education Aquatic Science and Technology and on PhD level, and supervise PhD students and postdocs as well as participate in the daily operations of the DSC centre for dissemination and education.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. Candidates for a Senior Research Scientist position must have academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as Researcher or Postdoc and have a track record of internationally acknowledged research in shellfish ecology and biology and coastal/estuarine ecology.
  • Furthermore, the candidate should have experience, knowledge and visions for integration of scientific findings with utilisation of results on a practical level in shellfish productions or fisheries management procedures or ecosystem systemic analysis and management. Experience with practical methods and procedures are important but candidates with modelling experiences are also invited to apply.
  • Innovative approach to the research field both in relation to developing the research but also in relation to the development of new solutions and new concepts.
  • Good communication skills are required and the candidate should be able to communicate with both fishermen and managers.
  • The ability to contribute to the development of external cooperation and to attract funding to the research area is seen as an asset.
  • Experience in scientific diving is an advantage.
