PostDoc position - Avian Evolutionary Ecology

Application deadline: 1.11.2015

3+2 year postdoctoral research position in Avian Evolutionary Ecology

The Institute of Avian Research (Wilhelmshaven, Germany) invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral research position in the research group of Dr. Sandra Bouwhuis. The position is available from the 1st of February 2016 for three years, with the possibility of extension for another two years. While the specific project is flexible and can be tailored to the skills and interests of the successful candidate, we especially welcome candidates that would aim to examine the physiological and/or (epi)genetic basis of life history traits and their ontogenetic change, making use of the institute’s long-term study on common terns (Sterna hirundo). With this in mind, the main responsibilities of the post holder would be to (i) independently develop assays for the collection of physiological and/or (epi)genetic data using both stored and newly collected blood samples, (ii) participate in the collection of blood samples and basic life-history data, and (iii) analyse existing life-history data, for example using quantitative genetic approaches. There also is opportunity for designing and carrying out little-invasive experiments. The successful candidate should hold a PhD, and preferably have some postdoctoral experience, within the area of evolutionary genetics, molecular biology or evolutionary ecology. Passion for research and team spirit are essential, while enthusiasm for the maintenance of databases and use of large datasets is a bonus. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required, as is a proven ability to publish in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals. Basic knowledge of German is useful, but not required. We offer a unique, large, local study population, a long-term individual-based dataset including a dense social (and genetic) pedigree, excellent on-site laboratory and administrative facilities, and the possibility to co-supervise PhD and Msc students, as well as the gaining of teaching experience if desired. The position is paid according to TVL E13 (http://oeffentlicher-dienst.info/tv-l/west). The Institute of Avian Research seeks to increase the number of women in areas where they are underrepresented, and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. The Institute of Avian Research is also committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply. To apply, please send, in a single pdf file: (i) a statement of your research interests, motivation and suitability for this position, and (ii) your CV, including a list of publications and the contact details of three references.
