Doctoral student position - parallel evolution in slave-making ants

University of Regensburg, Institute for Zoology

Application deadline: 31.7.2016

A 3 year position for a doctoral student (TVL-E13 65%) is available at University of Regensburg (Prof. Jürgen Heinze). Aim of the project is to detect genomic traces of parallel evolution in slave-making ants. Workers of slave-making ants pillage brood from the nests of related ant species, which after emergence serve as “slaves” in the slave-maker colony. We will compare the genomes of several related, but convergently evolved slave-making ants with the genomes of their host species to identify genomic changes that may have facilitated or accompanied the evolution of this bizarre life history. The project involves collecting ants in the field, next generation sequencing techniques, qPCR, and bioinformatics. Applicants should therefore have a strong interest in organismic biology of social insects combined with a basic knowledge of genomic methodology and bioinformatics.

The doctoral student will work in tight collaboration with other members of the research team of Prof. J. Heinze in Regensburg (http://www.uni-regensburg.de/evolution) but will also conduct genomic and bioinformatics analyses jointly with the teams of Prof. Erich Bornberg-Bauer (https://www.uni-muenster.de/Biologie/Mitarbeiter/Bornberg-Bauer.html) and Prof. Susanne Foitzik (http://www.bio.uni-mainz.de/zoo/evobio/). In Regensburg the student will enroll in the Regensburg International Graduate School of Life Sciences (http://www.rigel-regensburg.de/) with workshops, summer schools, method courses, seminars, etc. Applicants with degrees from non-European countries need to pass a PhD qualification exam before admission.
